6 Allied Health Courses That Prove Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Not all heroes wear capes.

Some of them wear scrub suits, some don’t.

You can see them in your local drugstores. In community clinics. In the emergency rooms. They’re basically everywhere. And they’re out there saving lives just like your favorite superheroes.

Human lives are valuable. You know that already. But it’s just as important to recognize the unsung heroes working hard to protect and save it: our allied health professionals. These heroes work hand in hand with our doctors to improve our healthcare. You know them. You just don’t realize it as much.

Who are these allied health professionals? To know who they are, let’s start with the courses that enabled them to become the heroes they are today! Who knows, you might find yourself joining this healthcare A-team.

1. Dentistry

Some of us grew up with dentophobia, or the fear of dentists. No judging here. It’s pretty common. But no need to fear! Dentists are allied health professionals who make sure your oral health is well taken care of! After all, oral health is important to your overall health.

They don’t just simply clean your teeth and give you candy after (for holding still, that is). They are also experts in catching a problem before it even becomes a problem. Think treating bacteria and plaque buildup early! That way you can prevent more pain in the future. Lifesavers!

Flash those big smiles. Learn more about Doctor of Dental Medicine!

2. Medical Laboratory Science

There is no treatment without the diagnosis. That’s where medical laboratory scientist saves the day. These allied health professionals are healthcare detectives who provide expert analysis of your laboratory tests.

From performing lab tests like analyzing blood, body fluid and tissue samples, to conducting diagnostic exams for early detection and treatment, medical laboratory scientists are the right guys for the job. Now, you don’t have to self-diagnose and panic your way into reading symptoms online. If you know what I mean.

3. Nursing

You see nurses on call whenever doctors need a hand. In fact, TV shows and movies feature lots of them on screen. Holding a clipboard, going on patient rounds, or chatting around in one corner. Buthere’s a lot missed out on these portrayals.

Nurses are allied health professionals equipped with basic clinical competencies, trained to care and provide the right support to patients. To say the least, nursing is a dynamic profession. They work in teams, and play a big role in the healthcare system. They look after the patients 24/7 from admission to discharge.

4. Pharmacy

If we only knew what medicine to take every time we’re under the weather, there’d be no need for pharmacists. But we don’t. That’s why we have these allied health professionals coming to our rescue. Pharmacists are medication specialists trained to offer expert advice and dispense your doctor’s prescribed medication. Helping you is their happy pill! (pun intended)

Aside from assisting patients over the counter, you can also find pharmacists advising physicians and other health practitioners on proper selection, dosage, and all-things medication. So the next time you need information on medicine, you know who to call.

5. Physical Therapy

Have you ever broken a leg or got an injury? Maybe you were playing with a friend or working out in the gym. Things like these happen every day. If you aren’t careful, it can even lead to serious pain and physical impairment.  For that, you’ve got physical therapists to save you (and your broken limb)!

These allied health professionals provide primary care treatment alongside other medical services. Physical therapists create treatment plans using many different techniques to help you move better and feel better. So you can roll right back in action. (But please, be extra careful next time.)

6. Respiratory Therapy

Last but not least, we’ve got respiratory therapists. Simply put, these are allied health professionals helping people who are suffering from heart and lung problems. Do you have a hard time breathing? You might want to consult a respiratory therapist. Quick.

They perform and analyze cardiopulmonary tests to determine what treatment or medication can help patients. Think chest x-rays and critical situations that need life support systems! Now, take a deep breath and go see a respiratory therapist.

The world needs more superheroes who are willing to do the hard work beyond the public eye. Lucky us, we got them right in place. In and out of clinics, drugstores, hospitals, and community centers. And there’s room for more. Want to join the team? Take an allied health course in college!
