Live Your Dream: 4 Scholarships For The Aspiring Journalists

Ever dreamed of seeing your name on the by-line of a newspaper? Or perhaps, covering an investigative report live? Dream on. With your raw talent and hard work, we won’t be surprised when you make the headlines (literally) in the media industry soon. But dreams often come with a price, don’t they? (tuition fees we’re looking at you!)

Being a journalism student means facing endless battles with deadlines, paperwork, and hefty expenses, too. More often than not, a major portion of your allowance will be spent on producing publication materials and buying handy equipment like a camera and tripod. Taking into consideration the inflation and rising prices of goods, it’s no joke.

Of course, not all hope is lost. You can find a way out of this tricky situation like you always do. One word is all you need: scholarships.

Check out these scholarships available for aspiring journalists like you!

The Konrad Adenauer Center for Journalism Scholarship

Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) of the Ateneo de Manila University aims to promote good journalism by providing training and educational opportunities for working journalists in Asia.

Here’s what you need to know: The ACFJ grants scholarships to full-time Asian journalists who maintain an excellent professional and academic record.  The grant covers tuition and other expenses if you take their two-year MA Journalism degree program.

You don’t have to worry about the Katipunan traffic! The MA Journalism program is a distance learning program, so it will perfectly fit in your busy schedule. The curriculum covers specialized reporting and writing courses on International Reporting, Investigative Journalism, and Reporting about Religions.

Inquirer Journalism Scholarship Program

Breaking news: One of the country’s top broadsheets offers a scholarship program for promising journalism students. As long as you maintain high grades and exhibit a prowess for writing, you’re a candidate to beat.

The scholarship program is open to outstanding students from the following universities: University of the Philippines Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, UP Los Baños, and the University of the East.

Every other year, at least five students starting on their third year in college, receive such prestigious scholarship. Once chosen, scholars get a stipend every year. What’s more, they are given the opportunity to work for the Inquirer for at least 2 years after graduation. It’s a dream come true!

Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship

The Maria Elena Yuchengco Memorial Journalism Scholarship is available to  Filipino-American undergraduate students who have Filipino heritage. Note: You must be studying journalism and be able to maintain a 3.0 GPA to be a scholar.

This scholarship is created through the Asian Pacific Fund to provide educational opportunities for students who pursue journalism. Esteemed publisher and editor of Filipinas Magazine, Mona Lisa Yuchengco, created this scholarship to support young students like you who plan to pursue careers in the media industry.

Hubert H. Humphrey Program

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program provides ten months of non-degree academic study for the fellows and aims to develop students who will have “multiplier effect” on their society. This prestigious fellowship is granted competitively in various fields, including journalism.

Established in honor of the late U.S. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, the program provides a year of professional enrichment in the United States for experienced Filipino professionals. The fellowship provides for tuition and fees, monthly allowance, book and supplies allowance, and round-trip international travel funds. With this grant, we know you will go places!

Let your talent and writing prowess shine. Seize your dream scholarship like no other! May this opportunity inspire you to serve the people well.
