Why University Canada West is a Truly World-Class University
Why University Canada West is a Truly World-Class University
There’s more to Canada than hockey, maple syrup, and Shawn Mendes. (Yup, he’s Canadian!)
Aside from breathtaking sceneries and chilly weather that Filipino students can look forward to, Canada is also home to some of the world’s best universities. It even earned the top spot as the most educated country in the world!
As more and more Filipino students look for opportunities to study abroad, we sat down with Mr. Brock Dykeman, the president of the University Canada West (UCW) to talk about university life in the Great White North.
UCW is a private, business-focused university in British Columbia established in 2005. Though it’s a relatively new university, it did not stop UCW from attracting students from all around the world. Why, you ask? We got five good reasons right here:
1. Scandinavian design in the Canadian heartland
There are a lot of schools to choose from across the globe. Might as well choose a school that gives off positive vibes right when you enter the door! After all, good study habits form in good study places.
That’s why starting next spring, UCW students will be enjoying a new campus designed by world-renowned Danish starchitects from the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Think glass walls, crazy angles, and a 7-million chandelier welcoming you every school day!
This six-story building hopes to accommodate UCW’s growing population—making room for approximately 5, 000 students. Just in time when you decide to enroll at UCW! (Hey, no pressure.)
P.S. President Dykeman likes to call the new campus “The Iceberg,” and just by the sound of it, you’ll probably have an idea how exciting it will look like.
2. International partnerships for global connections
Cool campus? Check. Next stop, quality education. Luckily, most Canadian universities tick off these two criteria! And they’re on a mission to make you future-proof and job-ready. University Canada West is committed to that same mission, too. Now, is that cool or what?
Aside from its programs like Bachelor of Commerce and MBA degree which are both accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), UCW courses will also integrate more IT components that can bring out the tech-savvy student in you. Perfect for the digital age!
Set yourself up for a thriving career wherever you are in the world. UCW’s 21st century learning approach and close connections in the business community can help.
Speaking of connections, UCW has also received recognition from credible institutions like the BC Council for International Education (BCCIE), BC Council on Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT), and the AACSB International, or the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) to name a few. Talk about world-class!
3. A cosmopolitan campus where you can study hard and play harder
We all know that studying abroad is not complete without going on an all-out adventure in your host country. And when it comes to having the best student cities in the world? You guessed it, Canada is the place to be. All thanks to its smart cities, scenic views, and friendly locals. (Did you know Canadians are known for saying sorry… a lot?)
University Canada West, for example, is located in downtown Vancouver where leisure activities are just within your reach. Literally. And by that we mean, the campus is only a few blocks away from a gazillion cheap restaurants, parks, beaches, even ski mountains. It’s basically a student’s paradise! Guess you know where to chill after a long day in school.
FYI, there are 3 ski hills near the UCW campus. Don’t forget to learn some basic skiing skills and pack up your winter clothes!
4. A load of work options for some real-world experience
For superhero students who can balance their studies and work, studying in Canada can be a dream come true! Unlike other countries that have strict work policies for international students, Canadian universities recognize that some students just need to do some hustlin’ while studying and… well, get that bread. At most, 20 hours of work every week!
While students tend to be very busy juggling school and work, UCW ensures every class is designed to help students thrive both in class and in their future workplace. No wonder Canada has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world. Vancouver, specifically, has a 95.4% employment rate. #goals
If you want to stay and work in Canada after graduation, you can apply for a post-graduation work permit. Here’s how!
5. Diverse school community that makes you feel at home
Studying abroad is fun and all. Until homesickness kicks in. And you wish you can teleport back home in a second. While that may sound like a feeling you can just sleep off, it’s a real challenge for some students. Especially if you’re from a tight-knit, family-centered culture like the Philippines.
Good thing, Canada is one of the world’s most diverse countries to be in. And it reflects in its diverse school community, too. While this won’t make the homesickness disappear, it helps to be surrounded by a ton of people who feel the same way. UCW has different groups for you to join in! Take your pick from their Academic, Career, and Social Support groups.
At University Canada West, cultural diversity is simply an understatement. Not only do international students comprise 95% of the student population, but they also represent around 50 countries. Building good relationships with your classmates and professors is easier, too, since UCW keeps a small class size of around 15 students.
P.S. Join the Filipino community in Vancouver. They’re about 250,000 and counting! Now, you don’t have to worry about missing adobo or having that one tita who loves you like her own. (Even if you’re not really blood-related.)
Did any of these reasons convince you to study at UCW like they did for us? Studying abroad can be really challenging, but know that it’s nothing short of fun and exciting, too. As President Dykeman puts it, be brave and do it! We’re pretty sure there are more than five ways to prove that studying abroad is worth it. Oh, and don’t forget to try Canada’s famous poutine!
